Itinerary

Day 1 - Tangier – Chefchaouen

From the Tangier airport, port or hotel we pick you up and drive through the Rif Mountains and the city of Tetouan to enjoy the views of the beautiful mountains and Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco until we reach Chefchaouen, one of the stunning towns at the foot of the Rif. The blue-washed medina becomes one of the best cities to visit in Morocco, surrounded by many arts, handicraft shops, restaurants on the square and cafés. Chefchaouen is a place to stroll, enjoy and get lost among its fantastic little lanes lined with blue-and-white houses that make it unique. On arrival we take a guided tour with a local guide.
Night in Chefchaouen — dinner and breakfast.

Day 2 -Chefchaouen – Roman Ruins – Fez

After breakfast in the riad, our journey heads toward Volubilis, crossing the Rif Mountains and a beautiful oak forest. We stop in Volubilis to discover the country’s most important Roman ruins and learn about Moroccan pre-Christian history, then drive to the city of Meknes (founded in the seventeenth century) where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we visit the historic sites of the medina, such as Bab el-Mansour and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Later we continue to Fez, where we spend the night.
Night in Fez — dinner and breakfast.

Day 3 - Fez (Guided Visit with Official Guide)

At 09:30, after breakfast, we begin our guided visit to the medina.
The Fez medina, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, is one of the largest walled cities in the world, founded in AD 790. We will wander the narrow streets full of shops with fresh fruit, a wide variety of spices, Berber carpets and many other Moroccan crafts. We will visit the Royal Palace, the tanneries, the potters and also the world’s oldest university, the Al-Quaraouiyine Mosque and University, created before Oxford and the Sorbonne. We lunch in the centre of the medina in a typical restaurant. After lunch we complete the visit and return to your hotel around 16:00.
Night in Fez — dinner and breakfast.

Day 4 - Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast we depart for the Middle Atlas, visiting Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco”, then pass through Azrou, a Berber town where we see Barbary monkeys and feed them. We continue toward Midelt along the Tizi n-Talghamt pass (1,907 m). Reaching Errachidia we cross Tafilalet to the Erfoud palm grove and onward to the Merzouga Desert.
Dinner and breakfast — accommodation in a kasbah hotel.

Day 5 - Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Nomads – Night in Haima

Today is a full desert day. After a hearty breakfast, we circle Erg Chebbi, the sea of sand that holds Morocco’s Great Dune, more than 250 m high, following tracks of the former Paris-Dakar with the Algerian mountains in the background. We stop at the Tissardmine oasis, where fossil quarries are still found, then continue to a nomad settlement to learn some of their secrets, and later to a panoramic point to view the whole Erg Chebbi. We reach Khamlia, of Malian origin, where we relax with tea while enjoying a short Gnawa spiritual music concert. Then we return to the hotel to set off on a camel caravan into the heart of the dunes and watch an unforgettable sunset. We arrive by camel at the camp in a wild oasis where we stay in a haima.
Dinner and night in the haima beneath a spectacular blanket of stars.

Day 6 - Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Gorge

If you wake early enough, the Sahara offers an incredible sunrise. Afterwards you ride the camel back calmly to the hotel on the edge of the dunes to appreciate the unique beauty of Erg Chebbi’s spectacular dunes with the first light. After breakfast and a shower, we depart for the Todra Gorges, famed among climbers: the highest and narrowest gorges in western Morocco, where we can walk a little before heading to the Dades Valley.
Accommodation — dinner and breakfast.

Day 7 - Dades Valley – Valley of the Roses – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast we begin the journey toward the Valley of the Roses, which blooms in April, then on to the Skoura palm grove where kasbah architecture spreads beneath the palms. We pause in Ouarzazate to photograph the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios, then head to Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most visited sight in the south; after the visit and lunch we follow the old caravan route through the Ounila Valley, past cave-built kasbahs to the Talouat Kasbah. We continue to Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi N’Tichka pass (2,260 m). Arrival in Marrakech around 18:00.
Accommodation in Marrakech — breakfast.

Day 8 - Marrakech – Guided Visit of the Old and New City

Founded in 1062, Marrakech has numerous UNESCO-listed monuments and is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities alongside Meknes, Fez and Rabat. A city of contrasts: its bustling streets and labyrinthine souks contrast with the calm of its riads and gardens. We start our tour with a local guide to discover the secrets of Morocco’s second-oldest city.
We visit:

  • Koutoubia Mosque (exterior).
  • Saadian Tombs (three mausoleums of the Saadian dynasty, late 16th c.).
  • Bahia Palace (late 19th c.) and the spectacular Ben Youssef Madrasa.
  • The medina and its famous souk.
  • Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, the main square of the old city, full of storytellers, musicians, food stalls and more.
The excursion ends at 16:00; the afternoon is free.
Accommodation in Marrakech — breakfast.

Day 9 - Marrakech – Airport Transfer
