Quick answer: Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km, or 7–8 hours with stops. The route crosses Ifrane, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and the Ziz valley. A 2-day round trip is enough for one night in the dunes; a 3-day tour lets you continue through the Todra and Dades gorges and finish in Marrakech.
Fes is the closest imperial city to the Sahara, which makes it the perfect starting point for a desert trip. This guide explains the Fes to Merzouga route, how long it takes and which tour length is right for you.
Distance and drive time
| Route | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Fes – Merzouga | ~470 km | 7–8 h with stops |
| Merzouga – Marrakech (via Todra & Dades) | ~560 km | split over 2 days |
| Fes – Merzouga – Fes | ~940 km | 2 days minimum |
The route: Ifrane, the Middle Atlas and the Ziz valley
Leaving Fes you climb to Ifrane, an alpine-looking town at about 1,650 m often called the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’. Next come the cedar forests near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques, and the high plateaus of the Middle Atlas.
After Midelt the landscape turns to desert. The road follows the Ziz valley, a long ribbon of palm trees in a canyon, to Errachidia and Erfoud, and then the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

2 days or 3 days?
2 days (Fes – Merzouga – Fes): drive to Merzouga on day 1, camel ride at sunset, night in a desert camp, sunrise on the dunes and drive back to Fes. Ideal if Fes is your base or you have limited time.
3 days (Fes – Merzouga – Marrakech): the most popular option for travellers crossing Morocco. After the desert night you continue through the Todra gorges, the Dades valley and Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech, so you never drive the same road twice.
4 days: the same route at a slower pace, with an extra night in the Dades valley.
The night in the Merzouga desert camp
Camps range from simple Berber tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms. Dinner is usually tagine, followed by drums around the fire and an incredibly starry sky. Read our guide to Sahara desert camps in Merzouga and what to expect on a camel trek.
