DAY TRIP TO ESSAOUIRA FROM MARRAKECH

Quick answer: The most popular day trips from Marrakech are Essaouira (2.5–3 h each way), the Ouzoud waterfalls (2.5–3 h), the Ourika valley and Imlil in the High Atlas (1–1.5 h), Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (3.5–4 h) and the Agafay desert (45 min). 1. Essaouira: the windy Atlantic port

Essaouira is the favourite day trip from Marrakech for many visitors. The whitewashed medina with blue shutters is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fishing port is full of blue boats and you can eat grilled fish straight from the market.

On the way you pass argan trees (sometimes with goats climbing in them) and an argan oil cooperative. Plan about 5 hours in town. Read our guide to things to do in Essaouira.

2. Ouzoud waterfalls

The Ouzoud falls drop about 110 metres in several stages and are the highest waterfalls in Morocco. A path leads down to the bottom, where small boats take you close to the spray, and Barbary macaques live in the olive trees around the falls.

Wear good shoes: the steps can be slippery. See our Ouzoud waterfalls guide for details.

3. Ourika valley and the High Atlas

The Ourika valley is the closest escape to the mountains, about an hour from Marrakech. You visit a traditional Berber house, walk to the Setti Fatma cascades and have lunch by the river. It is a great option in hot months because the valley is noticeably cooler than the city.

If you prefer more variety, the Three Valleys day trip combines several Atlas valleys and viewpoints in one day.

4. Imlil and Toubkal National Park

Imlil is the trailhead for Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. On a day trip you do not climb the summit, but you can hike between Berber villages, walnut orchards and terraced fields with views of the peaks. Read more in our Toubkal and Imlil hiking guide.

5. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous ksar (fortified village) in Morocco and a UNESCO site seen in many films and series. The road crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, one of the most spectacular drives in the country.

It is a long day (around 8 hours of driving in total), so if you can spare an extra night we recommend continuing to the desert instead. See our Ait Ben Haddou guide.

6. Agafay desert: sunset and dinner

Agafay is a rocky desert of soft hills about 40 km from Marrakech, with the Atlas mountains as a backdrop. It is not the Sahara (there are no big sand dunes), but it is perfect for a sunset camel ride, quad biking and dinner under the stars without a long drive. Compare both in Agafay vs Sahara.

7. Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque

Casablanca is about 3 hours away by road. The highlight is the Hassan II Mosque on the ocean, one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors on guided tours. Read our Hassan II Mosque visiting guide.

Tips for booking a day trip from Marrakech

  • Leave early. Departures around 8:00 avoid the heat and give you more time at the destination.
  • Private vs group. Group buses are cheaper but stop at fixed shops; a private driver lets you choose your stops and timing.
  • Do not combine too much. Essaouira and Ouzoud are in opposite directions – do them on separate days.
  • Consider the desert. If you dream of big sand dunes, a 3-day Merzouga tour is far more rewarding than a long day trip.
