A short history
For centuries, caravans carrying salt, gold and slaves crossed the Atlas between the Sahara and Marrakech. Ait Ben Haddou was a stop on that route, and its families built fortified houses of rammed earth and adobe. Today only a few families still live inside; most moved to the modern village across the river. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ksar and nearby Ouarzazate have appeared in films and series such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones. Ouarzazate’s film studios can be visited too.
